Benefits of a website

A good friend of mine asked me, "Why do I need my own website?.... I have flickr, blogger, facebook, etc"

Good question, here are some good reasons why you might need your own website.

1. It will last forever
Once you purchase the domain name, it’s yours. It’s yours as long as you pay the yearly fee of $5-8 a year and in your lifetime of 50-70 years, that’s around $500-600 within your whole lifetime. You can keep it and do anything with it, without having to worry about anyone else owning something similar and writing bad things under your name. What if you get successful and someone banks off your name? Its an added cost to acquire that name and the frustration associated to getting people to your new website since someone already owns it.

2. Use it to market yourself
You can use this new website to market yourself and show to the world what you have to offer. How useful would it be if you can use this tool to showcase your portfolio? What about putting yourself under the light showcasing your resume and work history? It works, and employers look at this to see how savvy and successful your skills are on the internet.

3. Personal email address
Think about this, which is more professional? phillipyang@gmail.com? Or Phillip@phillipyang.com? Or me@phillipyang.com? I would rather prefer employers or business people to contact me directly through my own domain so that I can store and control how my internet gets handled. Gmail and Yahoo might be great, but privacy and storage becomes an issue. With your own website, its only as large as your hard drive. Plus its free publicity for your own website.

4. Unlimited applications
You can put anything on your website. I’m using a blog tool called moveabletype and anyone can post and create articles on your own website. Flickr is another application you can enable on your site, personal portfolio applications, forums, galleries, anything! You can get very creative and use web 2.0 type applications to enhance the functionality of your website

5. FTP and Storage
You can use your website as storage and a way to get files anywhere with an internet connection. Store your photos, documents and other important docs via FTP without having to carry around a USB connection. Just make sure you secure your FTP so everyone can’t get your personal files.

Summer 2007, a new promise to myself

I've decided tonight at 1:27am after talking to some friends that I should go out and explore the world. I shall take a plane trip on Thursday night and go someplace for the weekend. Return Monday afternoon and get ready for my next class at 5:30pm. How nice would that be? I'm guessing the weekly budget would be $150 for airfare if chosen wisely, $60 x 4 nights = $240, $25 x 4 for food, $100 spending money...Total: $500 a weekend.

Sleep Schedule

I have been having a hard time trying to keep a fixed sleep schedule and I end up sleeping later and later each night. its 2:30am and its been only 1 hour off since my last post last night at 3:30. I have to start fixing this or else i'm done for when finals comes around.

I might start a diet starting tomorrow. Its been a long time coming but it has it advantages. I can save a lot of money not eating out and splurging on nonessentials.

New semester, new insight

As I enter 2007 with new things this semester, I look back to see what I have accomplished and also what I left undone in 2006. As spring 2007 semester is starting its 2nd day of classes this week, I had the opportunity to meet with my advisor's and decide on a suitable education goal for myself. I have decided to stick with my public policy major and do business as a minor. This will add some time to my graduation but I feel its for the best for my education goals and overall experience here at sc.

In other news, Dwayne Jarrett has decided to leave USC forever and join the ranks of the NFL for his family and his own personal gain. He did win the All American award two times and caught over 70 catches totaling over 1000 yards this season. Hopefully we can get some new players in next season and beat the gators in 2008 BCS.

Playstation 3: The story

With having the Playstation 3 launch on Friday November 17, 2006, Mike Langford and I decided to buy one of these devices to sell on eBay. As soon as we got to our destination in Costa Mesa and Irvine, we were met with long lines of geeks, thugs, and very avid entrepreneurs in each location. Here is the story of our adventure:

8:30pm

Our first place to check out was the Costa Mesa Best Buy about 45 minutes off USC near the 405 freeway. The line was seriously about 50 people strong and had two lines for the same store. The estimated unit arrival for this store alone was near 15. The odds Mike and I were going to get it required finesse and a bit of luck to get, so we decided to screw this and head for Irvine Fashion Island.

11:00pm
We arrived to the Circuit City in Fashion Island and we were greeted with security guards and a very desperate looking mob outside waiting for the PS3. The lines for this store didn’t start up until 3am and everyone was just circling around the store entrance waiting until the 3am deadline.

12:00am
This was the closing time for Fashion Island and I felt this was the time to make my move. As the security guards at Fashion Island (about 5 guards) decided to clear the parking lot, there were plenty of bystanders who were causing a scene of anger and confusion. While Mike and Karim decided to go get gas and food, I was left alone to make my master plan. I decided to stay in the parking lot and risk getting a ticket and getting arrested for trespassing. The circuit city store had no line, and they had 15 PS3’s at this time. I was pretty enthusiastic about my chances right now and hid behind some columns and some trash cans to make my quick lineup until 3am.

1:30am
By this time Karim, Will, and Mike arrived back with my food but I was already feeling the effects of the pressure trying to hide from the police. They had guards searching through the parking lot and on the property near circuit city and I felt like I was running away from Alcatraz. After waiting for a few minutes, my body was feeling fatigued and I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle this for another hour so I gave up. This was my big master plan but failed. As I was walking down the steps and into the parking lot into the hands of the police, I thought of something else more genius that would get me and all my friends inside the store.

2:00am
As I was walking down into the hands of the Newport Police now, I thought up of a story that I was a circuit city employee and just came off the late shift here at 11:00pm. The officer named P. Miner was present and he questioned me about who, what, where, and how PS3’s were going to get released. I told him about 15-20 units were there and the release was going to happen at 5am with vouchers from the store itself and I also showed him the OFFICIAL line for the PS3 launch. After I showed him and said that this was the line blah blah blah, he believed me and said to wait here so he can discuss with his partners on what to do next. At this time I was feeling confident that I would be the one in line and securing my own spot but then a bombshell dropped on me. They asked for my manager’s phone number with my name and my personal contact information too. At this time I was like “shit, cats out of the bag, they’re going to arrest me for fraud” but in reality I was very cool and gave him my number including Will. After I gave the numbers, I fled into the parking lot with the mob of about 300 people and talked to will about the incident. At first he freaked out and said he wasn’t a manager at Circuit City and can’t impersonate another person but we made up a name and did a story to convince the officers in line to put me in charge of the whole distribution thing with the line. After calling and having Will (aka Peter Assistant Manager) yelling at the officers for waking him up (pretending he just got off his shift and was sleeping to work the next day), he sounded damn convincing and the officer was very apologetic about the whole verification and calling in the wee hours of the night.
After that was clear, I was given access to the line and was told to bring 15 people out of the crowd to stand in line. I picked 6 of Jon’s friends including him with, 4 of my own friends, 5 other USC buddies of mine and we proceeded to the line. When the crowd saw that we were getting in line, a riot started to ensure and the police had a hard time letting my group go. The mob was yelling “WTF, WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE”, “why are they getting in line and not us?” “HE DOESN’T WORK FOR CIRCUIT CITY”, etc. Pushing and shoving started to occur and my group got lost in the mob while I managed to get around 5-6 people in line with me. We had police protection and backup did arrive bringing the security to about 8, and police to around 20. When the sergeant of the Newport police came up to me asking who the 15 people in line was, he wanted me to point them out of the mob and soon after the crowd started begging and started yelling for my attention “PICK ME PICK ME”. As soon as the crowd got more desperate, I saw that this was not going to work out since there was an immense pressure from the crowd trying to prevent me from picking anyone from my group. Everyone started yelling and throwing stuff so the police said to me “Fuck this, get your fucking group out of here”, and I had to leave with my only chance of standing in line at this point. I was so close but had no cigar, everyone dispersed and everyone followed me thinking I was some circuit city employee while people were coming up to me wondering how the fuck we got in line. When some components of the crowd didn’t participate with the evacuation of Newport, they started bringing out the tear gas and bean bag shotguns so everyone started running and hiding behind cars just incase they started to use those weapons against us. When I saw those weapons being displayed, I got an image in my head like this

Everyone hiding and running away from the police over some stupid PS3’s, my god what has this world turned into? The behavior of hundreds of people was predicated over supply and demand and the chance that they too can make thousands of dollars on ebay.

I gave up at 4:30am and went to sleep. Its not worth selling over my soul even though I tricked the officers to have me and everyone I know stand in line out of the whole crowd. Create your own opportunities, that’s what I did.

At the time of this post, the average selling price for Playstation 3’s were at $2,500 each with the price buying it at retail was $600.

Playstation 3, the waiting begins

I never realized how hard it was to wait for something so trival and so useless in my whole life. Planning the logistics to stand in line while you compete against grown ass men is a sight to see. I'll be camping out tonight and hopefully everything works out as planned and I can get my hands on a PS3. I'm going to keep the device or sell it online for a small profit. Who knows, I put my chances at around 20%

Life shock... and also revival

This is my 8th week at SC and I tend to realize the enormous quantity of people that comprise this university. It makes me want to work harder in everything I do and believe in things I've never thought possible for myself. Today was one of those nights where I was realized about myself that I wasn't doing so great and it kicked my ass. Its where someone says something life changing and you realize that its so true and yet so fucking sad at the same moment. Where laziness and being stagnant is the definition of you and the point of your guilty conscious wants to slap you in the face for being so dumb at wasting your time. I'm working harder everyday, pushing to be the best. Its hard but its all worth it at the end. Its getting that corner office with your name on the wall with your own parking space with the 7 series parked in it saying "BIM3R" on the license plate.

Be the shark, be the guy with the biggest ego in the world, and you can achieve ANYTHING.

What is life about?

What is being a student about? As a student of a large University such as USC, I have realized that there is more to life than obtaining a 4 year degree and finishing school. We work in our lives day to day hoping to just survive and pass our next midterms but we always forget the most important thing in life. We ought to change the world each day and strive to work in the best possible way to bring quality and compassion into the people around us. A student should mean being educated and being more sophisticated right? But in actuality, you’re learning to become institutionalized into the thinking of being subservient and passive in your thinking. Independent thought and intellectual wellbeing should be the goal of any individual and questions should be 20 chapters thick. Don’t be the countless of millions of students who traverse the intellectual steamboat to go back to a more normal typical lifestyle. You should become a mentor, educate others, and contribute back to society.

What are Friends? What happens when you need to call on friends and they don’t show? What happens when you get a flat tire and you need to ask for help? People think they have a lot of friends but who are your TRUE friends? The power of friendship can be overlooked many times throughout the life of a friendship but how strong is that connection? Who cares if you live a long life and get paid 6 figures a year with benefits? Is it worth living knowing that the people around you are living a more destitute life while you sip your wine glass in a house of cards? Friends are there whenever you call them, friends ask you how your day went and why you’re feeling like a box of sadness. They shape your life forever.

What is in a dream? What is your goal? You should know this the second someone asks you this question. It should be so open ended that nobody can tell what it is. If you plan your life out too strictly, you constrain yourself to that only possibility where life can have had other plans for you. Having the ability to change with the direction of wind is a marvelous gift anybody in your shoes can do. Don’t restrict yourself and limit yourself to being mediocre. You should be that person with a dream and reach it. Don’t let a dream die or a part of you will die with it. People with dreams should work hard and actually try to get them to the playing field and see how it plays out. Having a partner that shares your dream is a person who is your supporter, your provider, and your whole being. Never let go of that person and keep those dreams alive.

What is risk? Risk – “noun 1. The possibility of suffering harm or loss; danger”. The official Webster definition should change to “The everyday decision where harm or loss is up to the individual”. Having the ability to take your life into your own hands is a major risk everyone in the world deals with. It is sad to think others in the world such as you and me reading this article are one of the lucky ones. What if you had only 1 week to live and never experienced the things you wish you could’ve done when you had MORE time. Put that remote control down, walk outside, look at the sky and just make a mental note about your sense of being. Risk is a state of mind and the only risk people worry about is the risk of how much money they will lose when they place a bet on blackjack but I’m not talking about financial risk, I’m talking about personal risk. Can you break out of the mold and be unique and satisfying? I’m not saying to be in the left field but more towards an elevated place in the middle. Different from the general pack with the ability to move things towards the greater good, it’s only scary because it’s different. Don’t be afraid to be different, leaders don’t become great by becoming non-risk takers.

Urban Dictionary: Rancho Cucamonga

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=rancho%20cucamonga

Rancho Cucamonga is a very new, suburban and beautiful city, with a bad reputation only because it happens to be in the infamous 909. It is nestled at the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains about an hour Southeast of LA. Many people that live here are white, have lots of money, and have children that spend it all. You can't get any home here for under $800,000. It's a great place to raise a family, seeing as everything worth visiting in Southern California is within about an hour or two and there are plenty of schools, parks (a new central park that should be in Beverly Hills), every single store you can think of and plenty of restaurants. The doctor for the WWF lives here, and Snoop Dogg lives about 10 minutes away.

There is a huge mall that just got built in Rancho located on the East Side (Etiwanda) that everyone calls the VG. If you have a nice car, (ie. Porsche, Ferarri etc.) you will probably drive it through this mall to show it off. Going to the mall is pretty much all the high school students have to do, other than partying, drinking, working on their cars, going to In-n-Out, Starbucks or shopping. Rancho is also full of Bro's with lifted trucks, Emo kids, plenty of really made up high school girls with Dior sunglasses and fake LV's, (especially ones that go to the three high school crammed within 5 miles of each other), Punkers, White trash that drive Hummers and Abercrombie and Hollister kids. If you don't drive a Mercedes or a BMW, know what Harvard on the Hill is, know what you do at the top of Haven, have gotten a ticket for jay-walking or have partied at the Haven Estates, you don't belong in Rancho. Sorry.

1: Where are you from?

2: Rancho Cucamonga

1: Isn't that the city from Next Friday and Bring it on?

2: Yes, and it is a real place!

Labor Day Weekend

I had a very enjoyable 3 day weekend this week and I wish it was longer. However, good things never last and I have a full workload in school starting Tuesday. During Labor day weekend, I had my sisters birthday party at my parents house and probably gained a pound or two from the heavy drinking and enormous amounts of food and bbq. After Saturday, I had a chance to go shopping for some clothes and its surprising how many kids are at Victoria Gardens during school hours. Got some sneakers and some shoes for shorts but I couldn’t find some damn slippers. @#%#. After staying at my parents for two nights it was time to leave and head back to LA.

As I am writing this post, I am in my morning class and the girl next to me is making strange noises. She sounds hungry but is trying to play it off like its someone else. Her stomach is LOUD. You can hear her stomach yelling in about a 4 row radius. Its embarrassing. hahaha

The Zen of Costco

First, be sure that you are prepared. Do you have The Card? What do you Need?

Next, consider the day and time. This is simply an exercise. There is no time that you can go to Costco when it will not be crowded. Accept this.

Stage one of your journey is the parking lot. The people are not looking. Do not hit them. Drive very very slowly. First gear. Slow, deep breaths. This will prepare you for the deeper stages. Patience is key in finding a parking spot. And if you are willing to back up an entire row length at 2 mph, a spot near the door can be yours.

As you enter, do not be distracted by the flat screen tv's. These are not the droids you're looking for.

Proceed with caution. Your cart cannot be steered forcefully. A light touch is needed. And be prepared to shift directions at a moment's notice. Practice cart ju jitsu. Feint. Pause. Look out for small women moving briskly. You do not need to be in their hurried way.

Items will not be where you expect them. One brand of toilet paper will not be sitting near the others. But allow your eyes to be open, for you will discover unexpected delights, such as a 10-cup fuzzy logic rice cooker for $89.99.

Be flexible, and let go of your expectations. Knowing that the 64-oz. Johnnie Walker Black Label won't fit (or look respectable, for that matter) in your liquor cabinet, choose the 750 of Glenlivet 12. Choose a few wines that you've never had before, trusting in the wisdom of the Costco wine buyer, who purchases more wine than anyone in America.

Relax into your poses, and do not allow the needs of others to influence you. Do not line up for the schmear of canned chicken salad on white bread that is being passed out. Your hunger needs can be met later.

Allow yourself to enjoy the beauty of the flowers. They are temporary.

Pick a checkout line. It doesn't matter which one. This is an opportunity to practice patience. Be friendly to the cashier. Allow the noises and shapes to soften. It is peaceful.

Next, allow your body and brain to come back slowly to the real world as you face the geometry problem of loading up a 2-seater convertible with all your purchases. Will the toilet paper fit in the front seat? Spatial awareness is important. This exercise will prepare you for re-entry.

Reflect on your experience as you slowly exit the parking lot. Did you find what you Need? Were you pleasantly surprised? Has the Costco experience created a sense of abundance?

And where are you going to put the 10-pack of Kleenex?
